Haslet Inline Skater Earns Alternate Spot on World Team

Brandon Esianor, 17, of Haslet, earned a spot as an alternate on the 2009 USA Roller Sports (USARS) World Team at the 2009 USA Roller Sports Outdoor National Speed Skating Championship/World Team Trials in Colorado Springs June 28-July 4. Esianor competed against more than 30 skaters from all over the U.S. in the Junior Men Division where only six skaters plus two alternates qualified for the team in his division.

The team will travel to China to represent the United States at the Fédération Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS) Speed Skating World Championships in Haining City, Peoples Republic of China, Sept. 16-27.

            In July, Esianor will compete in the USA Roller Sports Indoor National Championship in Peoria, Ill.  He qualified for that event at the 2009 South Central Regional Championship meet in Waco.

Esianor skates for DFW Speed, based in Haltom City.  DFW Speed is coached by Ricky Brock of Haltom City, Todd Hackney of Arlington and Gary Hilliard of Grapevine. Members train at the Arlington Skatium in Arlington and the Holiday Skatium in Haltom City.

Ice skater Chad Hedrick (of Houston, Texas) won bronze, silver and gold at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. Hedrick started his career in inline speed skating, winning 50 World Championship titles.  Ice skaters Joey Cheek and Apolo Ohno also won medals at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, including Olympic Gold.  Eleven former inline speed skaters were Olympians in the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, Italy.  All were involved with roller sports before switching to ice.  Source:  USA Roller Sports (www.USARollersports.org)
