Champion Inline Skater from Texas has Ohio Connections

Joseph Burns, 16, of Mesquite, Texas was in Ohio going in circles April 11, and 12, but he wasn't lost.  Joseph is an inline speedskater and he was in West Chester for a meet, where he was joined by his grandparents, Gerald and Jo Ann Burns of Ansonia, Ohio.

Joseph finished first in the 500 and 1,000 meter races and as a result won first place overall in the  Standard Junior Men Division.  Then he moved on to the relay races.

First, Joseph teamed up with three skaters from Pennsylvania and they finished first in the 4-man relay.  Joseph then joined Gianna Guerino, a skater with the Michigan Wolverines, and they finished second in the 2-person mixed relays.

Joseph is an inline speedskating national champion.  He won his title in July of 2008 when he won first place overall in the USA Roller sports national championship meet in Lincoln, Neb., where he defeated more than 20 of the country's best inline skaters in the Novice Sophomore Division.  He also set two new records that day.  Joseph skates for DFW Speed of Haltom City, Texas, near Fort Worth.

Joseph was accompanied to Ohio by his younger Brother, Spencer, 10, and parents, Heidi and Scott Burns. His Dad and brother also skate for DFW Speed and his mother is president of the parents club.  Joseph and Spencer also train and compete on ice skates.

Mesquite skater claims USARS national championship

Mesquite resident Joseph Burns, a member of the DFW Speed skating team, took first place recently at the 2008 USA Roller Sports National Championships in Lincoln, Neb.

The 16-year-old edged DFW Speed teammate Micahel Machalicek of Sachse to emerge from a group of more than 20 other skaters to claim the national championship in the Novice Sophomore Men's Division.

Even before the final race, Burns sent a message that he was primed for big things this week. In the semifinal heat race of the 1,000 meters, he posted a time of 1:33.91 to set a new record in the event.

Later, in the 500 meters Burns' time of 46.40 established a new record in that event. Both of the records that Burns broke had stood for the past 10 years.

Although he has already captured the individual national title, Burns' week is far from over.  On Thursday, he will pick up action in the two-man relays along with DFW Speed teammate Brandon Esianor. Burns is also eligible to compete in several other relay races at the national championships, which are scheduled to conclude on Saturday.

It has been a busy month for a handful of Mesquite-based in-line skaters who have been competing in events all over the region.

On May 24, brothers Joseph Burns, 15, and Spencer Burns, 8, who compete for DFW Speed, each won titles at the South Central Regional Championships in Waco.  As a result, both qualified for the 2008 National Speed Skating Championships in Lincoln, Neb. on July 13-17.

Joseph Burns won the title in the novice sophomore men's division, while also taking second in the Standard Division. He beat out five other competitors in five races. In the 500 meters, Joseph Burns was off to a big lead only to be edged at the wire by a DFWSpeed teammate.

Undeterred, he bounced back to take first place in both the 1,000 and 1,500 meter races.

Spencer Burns followed a similar path to his Primary Boys Division championship, getting edged at the wire in the 200 meters, but coming back to claim first place in both the300 and 500 meters.

The two brothers will be joined in Lincoln by Mesquite resident Joseph Hooks. The 12-year-old Hooks placed in the top three of the Novice Elementary Boys Division to earn his spot at the national competition.

In all, 10 members of the DFW Speed team won regional championships and 23 members earned qualifying berths at the national meet.
