Michael brings the 1500 meter final to an exciting finish when he catches the leader at the finish line, hawks and then falls down, but still finishes a very close second and laughs about it.

National Champion Speedskater Heads for National Competition

Michael Ringer, 17, of Cedar Hill will head for Colorado next week to compete in the USA Roller Sports (USARS) Outdoor National Championship on a 200-meter banked track at the Velodrome, an Olympic Training Center facility in Colorado Springs, where skaters compete for a spot on the national and world teams.  Ringer has a leg up because he won a spot on the national team last year at the 2008 Outdoor Championship.

Ringer is a USARS 2009 South Central Regional Champion.  He won the title in Waco May 23 when he finished first in the 1,000 and 2,000 meter races and second in the 500 meter race. As a result he was awarded first place overall in the Standard Junior Men Division. That qualifies Ringer to advance to the 2009 USARS Indoor National Speed Skating Championships July 19-25 in Peoria, Ill.

Ringer also qualified in two relay races. First, he partnered with DFW Speed team mate, Brian Talley of California, and the duo finished first in the 2-man relay in the Senior Men Division. Then Ringer finished first in a 4-man relay with Brandon Esianor, 17, of Haslet, Johnny Pardee, 24, of Dallas, and Brian Talley, of California in the Senior Men Division.

In April, Ringer competed in the annual Texas Road Rash, an outdoor speedskating marathon in Round Rock where he finished sixth out of 19 skaters in the Professional Male Division. He completed the 28.6 mile marathon in one hour, 27 minutes and 41 seconds.

Ringer is junior varsity member of the cross-country team at Cedar Hill High School where he just finished his junior year.

Ringer is sponsored by Cado Motus and competes for DFW Speed. The team is coached by Ricky Brock of Haltom City, Todd Hackney of Arlington and Gary Hilliard of Grapevine. Members train at the Arlington Skatium in Arlington and the Holiday Skatium in Haltom City.

He is the grandson of the Rev. Hezekiah Stallworth of Elkhart, Vernice Small of Lovelady and the late Rev. Theodore and Mrs. Lucille Ringer Sr., of Marquez.

In September, Ringer will travel to China with the World Team, as they represent the United States at the Fédération Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS) Speed Skating World Championships in Haining City, Peoples Republic of China, on Sept. 16-27.

In July, Ringer will compete in the USA Roller Sports Indoor National Championship in Peoria, Ill. He qualified for that event by finishing first in the Junior Men Division at the 2009 South Central Regional Championship meet in Waco.
